"There is one experience that immediately unites us - losing someone we love. However, this book is unique in that LaVeck's story chronicles the loss of two husbands in one young lifetime. While LaVeck is courageously honest and vulnerable about his process of grieving, you can't help but smile as you fall in love with the budding romances that mature into life-long partners - twice. It's a compelling account that also provides humble and immediately accessible guidance for anyone who may be grieving."

Life After Losses by James LaVeck is a deeply personal book from the very first word. It is a story that seems intent on taking the reader on a journey that none of us would willingly choose - the unexpected death of two husbands.
In his memoir, Mr. LaVeck is loving, if not brutally honest about how, as a young man, he was utterly unprepared to deal with the first death and how he managed through it. Years later, he found himself applying those experiences a second time around in an entirely life-changing way. He had to. This time he was a single father.
While he doesn't describe Life After Losses as a self-help book, this book's optimistic, straight-forward, and making lemonade out of lemons approach would be impossible to read without becoming a better person for it.
Yes, with hope, belief, persistence, and love, Mr. LaVeck proves there is Life After Losses for all of us.

It could be expected to experience the loss of one spouse, but two? Unthinkable!
In his book, Life After Losses, James LaVeck narrates his recovery process after such a situation.
LaVeck opens his world and shares his heart and his truth with us in an approachable and engaging manner -- as if we were sitting at a coffee shop together chatting.
Most important to note is that LaVeck conclusively demonstrates the power of Hope as he shares his journey from devastating losses into a fulfilling new life.

James LaVeck’s Life After Losses is both heartbreaking and uplifting. It is a small miracle how Jim has crafted his beautiful love story (actually two) while also providing an inspirational guide to help anybody who has dealt with grief and loss get through the darkness.
LaVeck takes us on a lifetime's journey which chronicles meeting the love of his life, losing him, and healing a place in his heart to find love again. Set against the historic period defining marriage and family equality in America, LaVeck and his husband adopted children, lived as a loving family and were welcomed in their community before the unthinkable happened and Jim was suddenly a single father.
His book is raw, honest, sad and inspirational, ultimately shining a light of hope on his beautiful family.

I applaud and celebrate James LaVeck for taking the time to put his incredible journey of resilience and moving through grief and getting on with life in the pages of this remarkable book.
He helps us to realize that we should treat each day as a gift to be shared with those we love. This book is a gift of honesty and openness. To go through the loss of a loved one (especially when that loved one is a life partner) is not easy. Imagine going through that twice and all before you are 48.
This book is James' unique story, warts and all. His honesty is refreshing. This is a first time book but hopefully not the last. From journaling, to blogging, to published book. It is a remarkable story and I highly suggest this book for all. He discusses life challenges that we all face even though the circumstances may not be the same.
Kudos, James! Well done!
